Distinguished and Famous people from Port Fairy
⚓ John Griffiths
John Griffiths brought a whaling enterprise to Port Fairy in 1835 after years building and operating vessels across Bass Strait. With business partner Michael Connolly, he also imported livestock and developed shipping connections. Griffiths Island preserves his name, but its earlier industry was far less picturesque than the walking tracks and lighthouse suggest today. Whales were killed and processed for oil; the local station’s operation ended as the resource was depleted. His career later included sending wool directly from Port Fairy to London. The island connects the town with a merchant whose enterprises helped shape its colonial port and exploited its marine wildlife.
⚓ John Brabyn Mills
John Brabyn Mills worked across the southern coast as a sealer, whaler and shipmaster before becoming Port Fairy’s harbourmaster in 1853. Financial loss in the wreck of Essington helped end his earlier coastal trading career. The house associated with him and his brother Charles preserves a tangible link with those working-port years. He held the harbourmaster’s post until 1871, a period when shipping remained central to the town’s livelihood. His responsibilities joined practical seamanship with the management of a port handling passengers, supplies and regional produce.
